If your having weird disk behavior it's always a good idea to run a disk integrity check. In OSX, this is extremely easy:

<ol>
<li>Open Finder and go to /Applications/Utilities</li>
<li>Click on "Disk Utility"</li>
<li>Select the Disk of interest</li>
<li>Click the button labeled "Verify Disk"</li>
<li>If any errors are found, click the button labeled "Repair Disk"</li>
</ol>

Sometimes the permissions on system files gets out of sync too. To return OSX to it's default permissions:

<ol>
<li>Open Finder and go to /Applications/Utilities</li>
<li>Click on "Disk Utility"</li>
<li>Select your main disk (Usually Macintosh HD)</li>
<li>Click the button labeled "Repair Disk Permissions"</li>
</ol>
